Japan Supports Water Supply and Sanitation Project Implemented by Local NGO in District Matiari, Sindh

Wednesday, September 16, 2026

The Government of Japan has provided assistance through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) for "The Project for the Construction of Water Supply and Sanitation Systems for 6 Flood-Affected Villages in Matiari." The project was implemented by a local NGO, named Sindh Community Foundation (SCF) to improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities in six villages of Matiari District, Sindh.

Under the project, six reverse osmosis (RO) water filtration plants and eighty-two sanitation facilities were constructed to address challenges related to unsafe drinking water and inadequate sanitation. The project is expected to improve public health and living conditions for local residents by providing access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation services.

To ensure the sustainability of the project, village-level maintenance committees have been established to manage the operation and maintenance of the water filtration plants through community contributions. Beneficiary families will also be responsible for maintaining and cleaning the sanitation facilities.

The Government of Japan has implemented more than 400 projects in Pakistan through the GGP programme, and will continue to support community-level initiatives, particularly in the areas of healthcare, education, water supply, sanitation, and human security. Japan remains committed to working with local partners to improve the well-being of vulnerable communities and to strengthen the longstanding friendship between Japan and Pakistan.
