Japanese Traditional Music Concerts by Ms. Sumie Kaneko

Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi co-hosted performances by Ms. Sumie Kaneko, Japanese Koto and Shamisen player, from Monday, October 8 to Thursday, October 11, at the Alliance Française de Karachi as part of the “Classical Music Without Borders” concert series, IBA Karachi, and NAPA.

Ms. Sumie Kaneko is an accomplished Koto and Shamisen player, Jazz singer, and songwriter who has studied at prestigious Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, then studied Jazz vocal at Berkeley College of Music. She started playing Koto when she was five years old.  Also, she was the first Shamisen player to win the Pulitzer Prize Paula Vogel’s “The Long Christmas Ride Home” And has collaborated with many of world instrumentalist.

Consul-General Mr. Toshikazu Isomura thanked Ms. Kaneko for traveling all the way to Pakistan to show her talent of playing such unique traditional music and reiterated the significance of cultural exchange between Japan and Pakistan through various fields including music. The audience was captivated by the fascinating diversity of Japanese traditional music and memorable fusion of Japanese and Pakistani compositions.
