Consulate General of Japan in Karachi organized a Japan Official Development Assistance (ODA) Press Tour on February 21, 2017
Karachi, 21 February 2017: The Consulate General of Japan in Karachi organized an ODA Press Tour in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation
Agency (JICA), in which a group of journalists from various media groups participated.
The purpose of the ODA Press Tour is to increase media’s awareness on Japanese Government Assistance Projects and its initiatives in Pakistan. Furthermore,
it was also intended to inform the Pakistani people about the contribution of Japan and Pakistan’s development in various areas.
This time, journalists visited 2 project sites related to child health care. The project sites were the Child Health Institute in Karachi that was inaugurated in last
December with Japanese Grant Aid, and the Indus Hospital in which a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit was set up by the Japanese Government under the Grant
Assistance for the Grass-Roots Human Security Project (GGP).
During the visit at the Sindh Government’s Child Health Institute, JICA staffs briefed about the background, purpose and significance of the “the Project for
Improvement of Child Health” with provision of 1.423 billion Yen to Sindh Government’s Child Health Institute under Japan’s ODA project. The Institute receives
pediatric patients from all over Karachi, of which population is approximately 4.16 million and that of children under 12 (the beneficiary group of the project) is
approximately 1.77 million. Japanese assisted institute enables the patients to receive specialized high-quality pediatric medical services and treatment with most
sophisticated medical equipment.
The unique aspect of the Child Health Institute is that this Institute is run by Poverty Eradication Initiative (PEI), Pakistani NGO through Public Private Partnership
(PPP) under the supervision of Health Department of Government of Sindh. This will be a good model for both JICA and Government of Pakistan.
On the visit to the Indus Hospital, the Completion Ceremony was held for “The Project for provision of Medical Equipment for Pediatric Intensive Care Unit to a
Hospital in Karachi”. The Government of Japan provided to the Indus Hospital with its assistance of US$ 86,460 for the medical equipment installed in a Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit. On the occasion, Consul-General of Japan in Karachi, Mr. Toshikazu ISOMURA remarked about the significance of the project and the Japanese
Assistance to Pakistan. These medical equipment will greatly benefit the population that have difficulty in accessing quality health care, and a huge number of patients
will benefit from this project annually.
