Consulate General of Japan in Karachi organized a Japan Official Development Assistance (ODA) Press Tour on August 11, 2016.
On August 11, the Consulate General of Japan in Karachi organized an ODA Press Tour in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in which 13 journalists from
various media groups participated.
The purpose of the ODA Press Tour is to increase media’s awareness on Japanese Government Assistance Projects and its initiatives in Pakistan. Furthermore, it was also intended to inform
the Pakistani people about the contribution of Japan towards improving Pakistan’s development in various areas.
This time, journalists, together with the members of the Consulate General and JICA, undertook the one-day tour and visited 2 project-related sites. The project sites included Bin Qasim Thermal
Power Station Unit 5 and 6, and one water filtration plant provided to Al-Khidmat Foundation by the Consulate General of Japan under the Grant Assistance for the Grass-Roots Human Security
Project (GGP).
During the visit, JICA experts briefed about the background, purpose and significance of the Thermal Power Station. Four units (Unit 1, 2, 5 and 6) out of six power generation units are Japan-made
plants, including two units (Unit 5 & 6) provided by Japan’s ODA projects. They introduced that particularly, the project for Unit 6 has been contributing to adding a generating capacity for
210MW annually which significantly improves the power supply in the area. The unit contributes 10.5% of the total power generation by K-electric.
On the visit to the Filtration Plant in Zaffer Town, a staff member of Al-Khidmat Foundation (AKF) expressed the appreciation to the Government of Japan for the provision of water filtration
plants. The Government of Japan provided AKF with US$ 90.952 (approximately Rs7.7 million) for the ‘Project for the Installation of Seven Water Filtration Plants’ in Karachi in July 2010.
These filtration plants greatly benefits the population that have difficulty in accessing safe drinking water and annually more than 20,000 residents benefit from these plants.
